Born in Niksar, Tokat in 1959, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Yalçın Taşmektepligil completed his undergraduate studies at Anadolu Hisarı Youth and Sports Academy (now Marmara University Faculty of Sports Sciences), his master's degree at Gazi University, and his doctorate at Marmara University. After working at Selçuk University between 1984 and 1990, Prof. Dr. Taşmektepligil continued his academic career at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ), where he received the title of Assistant Professor in 1996, Associate Professor in 2011, and Professor in 2017. During his long service at OMÜ, Taşmektepligil held academic and administrative positions, including Deputy Dean of the Yaşar Doğu Faculty of Sports Sciences (2016-2017) and Head of the Department of Sports Management (2015-2018). Having served as the Dean of the Faculty since March 2017, Taşmektepligil was married and a father of three children. The son of the late Dursun Taşmektepligil, a prominent figure in Niksar's recent history and a former educator and teacher, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Yalçın Taşmektepligil was known for his respected and beloved reputation in sports and academic circles in Samsun, while also maintaining strong ties to his hometown of Niksar.
